Thousands of people reportedly gathered near a subway station in the Belarusian capital of Minsk on Saturday, August 15, in tribute to Alyaksandr Taraykouski, who died during protests that gripped the country following its disputed election.

Taraykouski, 34, died on August 10 from what Belarus officials claimed were injuries he suffered when an explosive blew up in his hand before he could throw the projectile at police.

However video later published by the Associated Press appeared to contradict that version of events. In the footage, Taraykouski could be seen standing in the street wearing a blood-stained shirt before he collapsed on the ground. No explosives could be seen in the footage.

In this footage from August 15, people can be seen gathered near the Pushkinskaya subway station in honor of Taraykouski. Flowers were laid in tribute, while images disparaging President Alexander Lukashenko were also visible at the scene.

Anti-government protests had taken place daily in Belarus since it was announced on August 9 that Lukashenko had been re-elected for a sixth term. The main opposition candidate, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, claimed the vote was rigged. Credit: Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty via Storyful
