STORY: Pressure keeps growing on Nintendo to unveil a new console.

The Japanese game maker said Friday it saw sales of its Switch device fall during the April-June period.

It moved 2.1 million units, when it sold close to double that amount in the same period a year earlier.

Nintendo's hybrid home-portable Switch has proven a popular device, but it's aging.

The firm is eking out sales while preparing to launch a successor.

An announcement is due on a new console during the current fiscal year.

Nintendo kept its full-year Switch sales forecast of 13.5 million units.

The company has a thin pipeline of titles announced for this year, including a new Legend of Zelda title, and another Mario game.

Nintendo's operating profit fell 71% to about $365 million in the first quarter, well below analyst estimates.

Its shares fell over 2% Friday ahead of the earnings report.

The gaming industry is dealing with rising costs and weak pricing power.

This week, Sony-owned developer Bungie announced it would cut almost a fifth of its workforce.
