An Australian opera singer has described how her “focus on breathing and music” got her through “dark times” as she was hospitalized with COVID-19 at the Royal Surrey Hospital in Guildford,England.

In video posted to Facebook on April 15, soprano Helena Dix is heard singing high notes along to the alert of her oxygen machine running low.

She told Storyful: “I was strapped to that machine for nine days, and each day I’d try to muster enough breath to sing with the machine.”

Dix, who was released from the hospital on April 15, had suffered a blood clot in her lungs caused by complications from the coronavirus.

In a Facebook post upon her return home, she said: "I’m SO grateful to the NHS for keeping me around. I feel like I’ve got some more high notes left in me!

“Every day I plan to sit at my piano. Discipline and patience will need to be my friend. If the end result is living and doing what I love again, it will be worth every inch of pain and frustration.” Credit: Helena Dix via Storyful
