Former Bolivian leader Evo Morales said on Sunday, October 27, that his vehicle was targeted by gunfire while he was traveling through central Bolivia and posted video depicting the alleged attack.

According to Morales, he was in a car with a driver and another occupant heading to a radio station in the town of Shinahota, located in the Cochabamba region, when the car was ambushed by heavily armed men in two vehicles.

Both Morales and his political party, the Movement for Socialism (MAS), said the attack occurred near gates to the Ninth Division of the Bolivian Army’s base near Villa Tunari, and blamed it on government forces. A statement from MAS said Morales’s vehicle was hit by four gunshots fired by “officers dressed completely in black”.

Video posted by Morales shows him reporting the shooting over a phone call before they quickly switch to another vehicle. That switch is made two miles (3.3 km) from a base occupied by the Ninth Division of the Bolivian Army.

The video, which was edited, then shows at least two bullet holes in the windshield of the second vehicle, along with a shattered rear window.

MAS said the first vehicle was hit by four bullets and the second by 14 bullets. The driver appears to sustain an injury during the incident.
