Photographer Elan Azriel captured timelapse footage of aurora borealis glimmering above Mekinock, North Dakota, on September 3.

Azriel told Storyful the aurora became visable as soon as dusk fell. “The sky lit up with varying greens, blues, pinks, and purples,” Azriel said. “By 2 am the aurora had gone directly overhead, showing no signs of slowing down.”

Azriel described the aurora as ‘spectacular,’ writing on Twitter that it was “unlike anything” he’d ever seen before. Credit: Elan Azriel via Storyful
