A black bear that left Wisconsin and traveled through Iowa and Illinois was spotted swimming across the Mississsippi River on Tuesday, June 30.

Pleasant Hill resident Joe Hartsock shared footage of the bear, named Bruno by those following its progress, crossing the Mississippi River in front of Lock and Dam 24 in Clarksville, Missouri.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources said the bear crossed the Mississippi River onto Island 464, which is across from Clarksville, but over the state line, in Illinois.

The IDNR urged the public to stay away from the bear.

“We know many of you want to get a glimpse or picture of him yourselves, but please remember to stay off private property and not to crowd the bear. Giving him plenty of room helps keep him, our staff, officers and the public safe,” the IDNR said.

On Monday, the Pike County Sheriff’s Department slowed traffic to help Bruno cross Interstate 72 in western Illinois.

Then, on Wednesday, reports said the bear had been spotted by a police officer in Elsberry, Missouri. Credit: Joe Hartsock via Storyful
