Workers drove out of the General Motors plant in Fort Wayne, Indiana, shortly after midnight on September 16 to mark the start of a nationwide strike over wages, benefits, and job security, local media said.

More than 40,000 members of the United Auto Workers (UAW) union at dozens of GM plants will take part in the strike, which began at midnight on September 16. Despite the work stoppage, the union and the company resumed negotiations at 10 am Monday.

In a video posted by Roxanna Lucas Murray, a UAW member, in the early morning hours of September 16, a procession of cars can be seen exiting the gates of the plant. A man identified by Murray as a fellow UAW member and her husband, Kevin Murray, can be seen waving an American flag as the cars pass by, with a number of them honking.

GM has called the strike “disappointing” and said in a statement that it had put forward a fair offer. “We have negotiated in good faith and with a sense of urgency. Our goal remains to build a strong future for our employees and our business,” it added. Credit: Roxanna Lucas Murray via Storyful
