Protests in Hawaii Against Construction of Billion-Dollar Telescope on 'Sacred' Land

5 年前

Several protests took place in Hawaii on Monday and Tuesday, July 15 and 16, against the construction of a billion-dollar telescope on Mauna Kea, which some native Hawaiians consider sacred.

There are already 13 telescopes on top of Mauna Kea, but the new project would construct a Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT), much larger than what is there now.

Protesters against the project blocked an entrance road to the site, and also gathered at the State Capitol building in Honolulu. Elsewhere, construction workers in favor of the project gathered in Hawaii County.

The project had been due to go ahead in 2015, but was stalled then by appeals and protests. Credit: @808progressive via Storyful
