Thousands of Palestinians joined a funeral procession in Jerusalem on May 16, with video showing police charging into the crowd as the coffin was carried near Herod’s Gate.

Footage by Saleh Zighari shows the chaotic scenes as the remains are carried of Walid al-Sharif, who died after being injured during protests at the Al Aqsa mosque last month.

Quds News Network, citing the Palestine Red Crescent Society, said “at least 70 people” were injured during clashes on the night of May 16.

The Israel Police said its forces had “acted against hundreds of violent rioters who violated public order and took violent actions against the forces.”

The police charge during the al-Sharif funeral followed violent scenes at the funeral of Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, where video showed police lashing out at people carrying her coffin. The Israel Police said its officers were attempting to “disperse the mob and prevent them from taking the coffin, so that the funeral could proceed as planned in accordance with the wishes of the family.” Credit: Saleh Zighari via Storyful
