Martin County Sheriff’s Office medical staff airlifted a hunter whose right leg had been bitten by an alligator approximately 10 feet long in the DuPuis Management Area, a nature preserve in southeastern Florida, on November 9.

The victim, identified in local reports as a 46-year-old hunter named James Boyce from Palm Beach Gardens, was the victim of what Martin County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Christine Christofek Weiss called a “pretty substantial bite.”

On Tuesday, November 12, Boyce was present at a St Mary’s Medical Center press conference, where he described the attack by the alligator.

Boyce said he was walking past an oak tree when he felt a sensation "like an electrical shock.

“I looked and there’s this gator,” Boyce said. The hunter said he beat the animal off his leg with the butt of his gun, with a “smash, smash, smash.” He then used his belt as a tourniquet until help arrived. Credit: Martin County Sheriff’s Office via Storyful
