Two police officers were caught on the hop when they were forced to launch a jet ski mission to retrieve a kangaroo from a Canberra lake on October 16.

Dean Isreb and his wife were walking along Lake Burley Griffin, near Canberra’s parliamentary precinct, when they saw the event take place.

Isreb told Storyful: "We noticed the kangaroo hop past us along the road. We all thought it was a bit unusual for the roo to be so close to the lake in such a heavily populated area.

“We lost sight of it for a bit and when we got closer, we realised it was about to dive in! After discussing whether kangaroos can swim (yep, they can…) for a minute, we saw the jetski police take off from 100m further along the lake. The kangaroo looked like it was trying to cross the whole lake as it was swimming pretty strongly toward the War Memorial side.”

The ACT police officers rode the jet ski alongside the swimming kangaroo, lassoed the animal and then slowly dragged it to shore. The kangaroo almost got away from the officers before they were able to wrangle the animal and hand it to council workers.

Isreb told Storyful that the kangaroo ultimately succeeded in a second break for freedom: “They hog tie the poor guy, and start to walk him to their truck. Not one to be tied down, the little guy shakes loose and bounds away, thankfully not in the direction of the lake!” Credit: Dean Isreb via Storyful
