Beekeepers Called to Remove Hive With 60,000 Bees From Ceiling in Brisbane

The bee experts of Queensland, Australia’s Brisbane Backyard Bees were called to clear a hive in a residential ceiling on August 17 that was at least eight feet long and housed 60,000 bees, local media reported.

Beekeeper Paul Wood recorded this video as he and his colleague Kevin surveyed the hive ahead of removing it for homeowner Laurel Lupschen.

Wood posted another video showing his colleague extracting the combs, safely vacuuming the bees into a secure box and harvesting the honey.

According to The Courier-Mail, it is Wood’s custom to bottle the honey and give half to the owner when he removes a hive.

Lupschen is quoted by local media as saying she never heard the bees “but noticed them entering a hole between the first and second” stories of her clapboard house.

The report cites Lupschen as saying, “I felt terrible about removing the hive, but they’re going to a safe place and he got just about every one of them."

Wood is quoted as saying that bees look for a hollow tree to establish a hive, but since people “don’t leave hollow trees standing, we cut them down,” the insects resort to building homes in walls or ceilings.
