The coffins of 25 coronavirus victims were transported from Bergamo to Padua on April 1 to be cremated, Padua officials said.

Due to the catastrophic death toll of the virus in Bergamo, local crematoriums have been overwhelmed, and many victims’ bodies have had to be taken elsewhere by the Italian Army, according to Padua authorities.

The municipality shared this footage showing army trucks containing the coffins being greeted by Mayor of Padua Sergio Giordani, councilor Francesca Benciolini, and local Catholic priest Father Marco Cagol, who is seen blessing the trucks as they pass. Local and national police also salute the trucks.

Mayor Giordani also shared the video on Facebook, and said it was an honor to pay homage and be close to the victims on behalf of the victims’ families and the Padua community.

More bodies were due to arrive in Padua from Lombardy in the coming days, officials said. Credit: Municipality of Padua via Storyful
