A 52-year-old woman was rescued and treated for head injuries on Sunday, January 23, after being rammed by a cow and falling roughly 40 meters (131 feet) down a cut in the mountainous area of southern Spain where she was hiking, police said.Mountain rescuers with the Guardia Civil, one of Spain’s two national police forces, said they located the hiker on steep terrain and amid foggy conditions in the mountainous Alpujarras region of Granada province, according to a press release from police.Emergency services had told police the woman, a resident of the nearby town of Almeria, had been “attacked by a cow that was loose in the area where she was walking,” police said.Rescuers had to descend 500 meters of rough ground to reach the woman, police said. She was found unconscious and had sustained a head injury “with open wounds on the face and skull,” as well as other injuries to her body, the Guardia Civil said.Due to the fog, a helicopter could not be used to airlift the injured hiker, so rescuers first carried her on a stretcher down the mountain before later transferring her to an ambulance, local media reported.
