Fire Crews Tackle Forest Fires in Eastern Ukraine as Five Confirmed Dead

At least five people have died in Luhansk, eastern Ukraine, as forest fires driven by strong wind damaged homes, authorities reported on July 7.

According to the State Emergency Service of Ukraine (SES), the fires broke out on July 6 and scorched about 80 homes in the countryside and “30 houses in the village of Smolyaninovo.”

Five people were confirmed dead, the statement read, with nine other people, including two children, hospitalized.

In total the SES said “1,125 people and 201 units of equipment were involved in the firefighting, including 638 personnel and 140 units of equipment from the SES, including 2 AN-32P aircraft.”
