Protests over the presidential election in Belarus continued as “thousands” took to the streets of Minsk on August 14, local media reported.

Anti-government protests ignited after it was announced on August 9 that President Alexander Lukashenko was re-elected for a sixth term. He has been in power since 1994.

The main opposition candidate, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, claimed the vote was rigged.

Local media said protesters were calling for the release of political prisoners, the removal of Lukashenko, and a new election process. Credit: Tut.by via Storyful
