Dozens Feared Dead in Nepal After Landslide Sweeps Through Village

At least 11 people were killed and 27 more were missing after monsoon rains caused a landslide that swept through a mountainside village in Nepal’s Sindhupalchowk district early on Friday, August 14, officials said.Shreedhar Neupane, a press adviser to the Speaker of Nepal’s House of Representatives, Agni Prasad Sapkota, told Storyful late on Friday that rescue efforts in the village of Lidi in Jugal Rural Municipality were being hindered by continuous rainfall and unstable ground.Thirty-seven houses were buried, and five people found injured were taken to hospitals in Chautara and Kathmandu, Neupane said.Nepal’s monsoon season, from June to September, regularly causes landslides and flooding, but Neupane said areas that were badly affected by the 2015 earthquake, including Sindhupalchowk district, were seeing an increase in landslides.Neupane accompanied Speaker Saptoka and other officials to the site by helicopter on Friday morning, and shot this footage showing some of the recovery efforts, and Saptoka speaking to responders.Rescue efforts were due to continue on Saturday.
