Former President Donald Trump has been indicted for a second time since he left office. The former president has been charged with 37 counts related to his handling of classified documents after leaving the White House. Most of the counts, 31 of them, are for willful retention of national defense information.

The 49-page indictment lays out the Justice Department's evidence against Trump. Some of the DOJ's allegations include details of two occasions in which Trump showed classified documents to individuals not authorized to view them and that the sensitive documents were stored in places such as a ballroom, shower, and bedroom at the former president's Mar-a-Lago estate.

The charges are being brought by longtime prosecutor Jack Smith, who U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed to oversee the Justice Department investigation into Trump's handling of classified documents. In a statement after the indictment was unsealed, Smith said "our laws that protect national defense information are critical to the safety and security of the United States. And they must be enforced. Violations of those laws put our country at risk," adding that "we have one set of laws in this country and they apply to everyone."

In a video statement released on Thursday, Trump said “I am an innocent man. I did nothing wrong." The former president is expected to arraigned on Tuesday.
