Crowds of People Seek Shelter in Kyiv's Metro as City Comes Under Attack

Kyiv residents sheltered underground in the city’s metro system on Monday, May 29, as Russia launched a barrage of missiles, Ukraine’s national broadcaster Suspilne said.

The morning alert came hours after an overnight barrage of the city, which itself was just 18 hours after a “massive attack” on May 28, the head of the city military administration said. Crediting the city’s air defenses, the military said no direct hits were recorded, and only minor damage reported.

Valery Zaluzhny, commander-in-chief of Ukraine’s armed forces, said 11 Iskander missiles targeted Kyiv, and all were “destroyed by air defense forces and means.” Suspilne said falling debris was being reported in various parts of the city.
